 De La Buena

Tune in this Friday during the 5pm hour with Scott Mullins when he as De La Buena live in our studios.  They will be performing live later that night with the Urbanites at Stonefly Brewery for a Haloween Party.

Growing from a trio into a powerful nine-piece over the last five years, De La Buena has been electrifying audiences with their own brand of Afro-Cuban and Latin Jazz. Employing jazz harmonic sensibility and a deep-seated love of diverse cultures, De La Buena explores the textures and rhythms of Latin musics of the Americas with roots planted firmly in Africa. The fruits of their labor have produced a live septet album, “En Vivo y Directo”, with a studio effort set for Spring 2008 release. Ever wondered what would happen if that “old school” salsa sound of the late ’70s came pulsating into the new millennium? Check out De La Buena.

Lala Brown

Some of you may already know that Milwaukee’s R&B singer Lala Brown was found murdered along with her boyfriend.  A really huge loss to the Milwaukee music scene.  She will surely be missed.

From TMJ:

A familiar voice to Milwaukee R & B fans has been silenced. Twenty-one year old Yolanda “La La” Brown and her producer, 22-year-old JeTannue Clayborn, were found dead in their recording studio Friday night.

Milwaukee police say both were found in the Loud Enuff Productionz studio at 55th and Lisbon. Both had gunshot wounds and had been dead at least a day before being discovered. They were reportedly dating.

JeTannue’s mother, Dina Chambers, describes him as energetic, with an eye toward making music his career. “He loved music. He loved people. He was very kind. They called him “Koo Laid” because every time you saw him, he was smiling.”

We got an message about this through our Myspace page and I would like to share it with you.

By now some of you have heard that Milwaukee’s own R&B starlet, Lala Brown was tragically murdered. She was a woman at point zero, and if you ever looked at my page, one of my myspace friends. I meet her briefly at Moct for Amy’s Urban Fashion week photo shot. She was lovely and positive. She was hard working and looking towards the future. I am so sad to hear that not only has she passed before seeing her dreams come to be, but that she was murdered.
There is deffinatly a hole in my heart for her. She was me, and she is all of us.
What were the circumstance? What did her murder accomplish? I am deeply wounded by the loss of our humanity. As a Milwaukee citizen, as an artist, as a women, as a black nationalist. We can no longer pick up weapons in anger or jelousy. We must show control, strength, and power in our choices, our words, and our actions.
La La was killed with her boyfriend in the studio. While it is unfortunate, it reminds me that not a single moment of our lives should be wasted.
make peace, make love, stop the violence!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ali Lubbad Kicks Ass

October 15, 2007

I just want to post a few words about last weeks 414 Music guest Ali Lubbad. Ali brought with him one of the coolest bands I’ve seen in a while. In addition to his own guitar and vocals the band consisted of Mike on the Oud, Leah on the harmonium and Neil playing several different types of drums. They were able to blend Arabic, African and Western music styles into a seamless, soulful groove through which Ali’s voice floated like cream in coffee. His voice reminds me at times of Will Oldham when Will’s at the deeper end of his register, not on the high lonesome warbly end.

Check ‘em out if you ever get the chance.

Thanks for a great show.

Today during the 5pm Hour, Scott welcomes Ali Lubbad, who mixes African instrumentation into his jazz/folk music.  Ali will be joined in the studio by a kora and oud player.

Mike Keane

Tune in this Friday to RadioMilwaukee’s 414 Music with Scott Mullins where he will have Mike Keane live in the studio for an interview and live performance.

Mike Keane has been playing music since he was 5 years old. the first instrument he learned to play was the Irish folk harp. mike played the harp for the next 10 years winning numerous awards and competitions. In college mike picked up the acoustic guitar and began playing open mics and house parties. since then he has moved to Milwaukee and has wowed audiences with his heartfelt songs, clear vocals and consistent guitar playing. mike’s style has been described as “an acoustic/folkpop sound with a very subtle funky undertone in the rhythm with lyrics and licks that won’t leave your head for days…in a good way.” mike engages his audience with his quick whit, conversational style and sincere and humble attitude so it is no surprise that he keeps eager audiences entertained whether he is an opening performer or the headliner.
