Seed combines everything from jazz, funk and rock to samba and classical in a highly unclassifiable and danceable psychedelic stew…Seed, at times, is largely reminiscent of Frank Zappa, with off-the-wall and obscurely humorous lyrics segueing into guitar wizardry.”

The Lackloves on this Friday’s 414 Music
April 15, 2008

Tune in this Friday at 5:30pm for another 414 Music with Scott Mullins. He will have The Lackloves live in our studios. The Lackloves will be having a cd release party this Saturday, April 19th at Linneman’s Riverwest Inn at 9pm.
The Lackloves were formed in 1996 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin by Mike Jarvis of early-90’s power-pop band The Blow Pops, who enjoyed international success with the release of the classic pop albums “Charmed, I’m Sure” and “American Beauties”, both released on Get Hip Records. Originally formed as a power trio with Dedrik Bornslger on bass and Tommy D on drums, The Lackoves picked up right where the Blow Pops left off.
In 1999, Jarvis got the Lackloves into the studio and on tape. These sessions, with former Blow Pop Nick Randazzo on drums, and the addition of lead guitarist Bob Eickhoff, resulted in the now out of sight, out of print, “As Far As You Know”, the fine performances on which do well to showcase Jarvis’s Lennon/Townshend/Wilson-inspired pop gems. The disc quickly sold out of its initial pressing and can now be found only in the extensive record collections of pop aficionados worldwide.
In mid-2001, Jim McGarry of Rainbow Quartz Recordscaught wind of The Lackloves, and after hearing a few tunes, signed the band and sent them into the studio. A year later, “starcitybaby” was released on Rainbow Quartz. Recorded at Milwaukee studio Walls Have Ears, with ex-Blow Pop Jack Rice now on bass and drummer Nick Verban, the album has a fuller, more realized sound than the previous Lackloves release.
The band, now with ace Milwaukee whiz Don Moore on lead guitar, played worldwide in support of “starcitybaby”, including stints in Madrid, London (inclucing a live performane on BBC Radio), Toronto, LA, New York, Chicago, and in late 2003, Tokyo, Japan. 2003 also saw the return of original drummer Tommy D back into the fold to pound out the beat for The Lackloves second full-length platter on Rainbow Quartz Records.

Jail on this Friday’s 414 Music
April 8, 2008

Join Scott Mullins this Friday where he will have the band Jail live in our studios at 5:30pm for 414 Music.
If you don’t know, then you should; that local band called Jail who have been laying some serious cuts between the bars. Melodies short, gritty and sweet like “Pardono” which I have posted in this article as well as the one which we were playing on the station as early as last year called “Now In Stores.” Good music from some Milwaukee cats that have been at it for a few years now. Playing at places like The Cactus Club and Stonefly to name just a couple of their haunts, they’ve built a small rep around town. If you’ve been fortunate enough to see them live then you know that the sound is infectious, spontaneous and likely to start a new round on the get down. edited by Marcus Doucette.
Catch Jail Saturday, April 12th at Linneman’s in Riverwest with The Midwest Beat & Cheap Time. Also check out a cool article on them over at Express Milwaukee.

Fever Marlene’s White China
March 19, 2008

Milwaukee’s Fever Marlene just released their second album with in a year from their first release. They took a departure from what they did on the Civil War record. That departure, I have to say is amazing. I loved Civil War, but I love it when artists try to do different things. This is what music should be about. They even video taped the recording sessions, and will be putting it on a DVD. They even posted some of those videos on youtube. Once you see these video, you can even appreciate the album even more.
Before you go view the videos, check out one of my favorite songs from the album.

Juiceboxxx Interview
March 6, 2008

Milwaukee’s Juiceboxxx is blowing up all over. Opening up for artists such as Bonde Do Role and playing at this year’s South by Southwest with former Urb Cover Girl Roxy Cottontail . The great Wisconsin music blog, ‘Muzzle of Bees’ did an interview of the man.
Here is an excerpt:
Juiceboxxx—you are awesome. How long have you been busting out the madness of your beats?
I’VE WROTE A LOT OF SONGS AND LIVED SOME LIFE. BEEN DOIN JUICEBOXXX SINCE I WAS 15.
I’m sure you’ve received the Bright Eyes comparison, pulling off the whole DIY music gig since your mid-teens. Does this comparison annoy you, flatter you? How old were you when you realized you had to work at it yourself to get a foot in the music industry?
I’VE NEVER BEEN COMPARED TO BRIGHT EYES BEFORE. JUICEBOXXX GROWS AT THE RATE I WANT IT TO GROW. I’M ALWAYS ON THE GRIND IN SOME WAY OR ANOTHER.
The first time I heard of you, it was my college newspaper music editor raving you up and down. He described you as “this skinny, white high school kid from the suburbs of Milwaukee that spits lyrics fierce.” I told him I’d believe it when I saw it. Well, I saw you and I believed it. Did you ever find it difficult for people to take your music seriously?
YEA, IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN A STRUGGLE. BUT A STRUGGLE I ENJOY. THE AUDIENCE OWES ME NOTHING. I WANT TO PUT ON THE BEST SHOW POSSIBLE AND MAKE EXCITING RECORDS.
Along with myself, you’ve won over the hearts and iPod spaces of many fans with your live shows—there’s no question that your performances capture your fan base. Your enthusiasm on stage is comparable to the likes of Dan Deacon and Girl Talk—is there much preparation prior to taking the stage, music you listen to that gets you pumped up?
PUTTING ON A COMPELLING LIVE SHOW IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME, AND IS SOMETHING I TAKE SERIOUSLY. SOMETIMES I WILL PLAY “BORN TO RUN” BY THE BOSS BEFORE I TAKE THE STAGE. IT IS MY FAVORITE SONG AND IT PRETTY MUCH SUMS UP MY TOTAL TUDE.

“Comprised of neon-loving kids Ahser Gray and Richard Galling. The Glamour is Milwaukee’s answer to a hipster prayer. With a sound borrowing from French touch and sweaty Midwest loft parties, their signature tune “Kidz Night” made them every blogger’s wet dream. “It’s simple,” says Asher. “Our mantra is just, ‘let’s party!’” -Urb Magazine
The Glamour – Kidz Night
